Animals was Roger Waters’ reaction to the situation in the UK in the mid-70s. Strikes, inflation and unemployment all lead to general anger and the rise of punk rock - the voice of the young railing against society’s woes.
Raving And Drooling and Gotta Be Crazy were earlier Waters compositions, but left out of the development of the Wish You Were Here album as lyrically and tonally they didn’t fit.
These songs became Sheep and Dogs in Waters’ expanded concept inspired by George Orwell’s Animal Farm.
The album, including Pigs (Three Different Ones), featured some of David Gilmour’s finest guitar work, and the bookending of Pigs On The Wing, a love song.
