After the three year Momentary Lapse tour, the band members took a break, with David Gilmour making guest appearances on numerous other projects, and Nick Mason working on a film soundtrack. In 1992, Gilmour, Mason and the Floyd’s manager Steve O’Rourke took part in La Carrera Panamericana, a classic car race in South America.
Creating new music for the documentary about the race inspired them to, in January 1993, start work on what became The Division Bell.
The album had a theme of communication throughout, and with Richard Wright formally back in the band and he took a major role again in helping to develop and shape the album and music.
