You played a major role as the soundtrack to our transatlantic crossing in 1983. We were four young Norwegians—Hauk, Erling, Arne, and myself—with an average age of 19. During the 15 days it took us to sail from Cape Verde in a 35 ft sailboat Jeanette VI, we sighted only one cargo ship and one sailboat: “The Ark” from Denmark.
In the middle of the night, we spotted “The Ark” in the distance. We sailed a little closer and, to our surprise, saw no one at the helm—everyone was sleeping, and the wind rudder was steering the boat.
We decided to play a trick on them, so we blasted Pink Floyd’s “Is There Anybody Out There?” (from The Wall) at full volume. Three confused Danish heads popped out of the cockpit as the words “Is there anybody out there?” echoed over the Atlantic. They were probably wondering what was dream and what was reality.
